We've been amazed by their talent for years now so it's no surprise to find Burnt Friedman, Grant Phabao, Aphex Twin or Atom Heart (under his Señor Coconut guise) in this Top 10 once again. These guys are at the top of their game, each one creating an exceptionally unique sound and an incredibly vast discography. Seek them out. Diesler and Quantic are no real surprise either, as the Tru Thoughts label they're on was one of the best of 2005 for all connoisseurs. Breakbeat programming and fusion of groovy styles gets re-invented with the Brighton twist in there. Ask your record dealer for their albums and singles! Newcomers are also welcomed in this bi-annual "Best Of", whether they're cool and fun like the Juju Orchestra, roots and classy like Orgatronics, hip and shaky like The Fort Knox Five or dark and lovely like Felix Laband. From sinister to sexy, robotic to playful, the sound of "Exile In The Woods" is undeniably unique and unforgivingly funky. Tight drums consistently hold down these instrumental, analog synth-heavy grooves. Half of the album's twelve musicians are credited with synthesizers, including bandleader/producer Cheeba, Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Steve Moore (Laura Veirs, Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet), and Aja West (The Mackrosoft). A wide array of more organic instruments are featured as well, including trumpet, violin, sax, clavinet, guitar, and melodica. Also of note is Peter Scherr of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra on upright bass.
In 1999, at 18 years of age, Cheeba was hired as a member of the Dust Brothers production team, an opportunity that enabled him to work alongside such innovative and diverse artists as Beck, Santana, Linkin Park, and Madonna. Three years, hundreds of songs, and one "Fight Club" score later, Cheeba parted ways with the Dust Brothers to focus on his own productions.
The first Cheebacabra album, "Metamorphosis", was released in 2003 to critical acclaim. Filter Magazine placed it on a "Best Records of 2003" list and Nic Harcourt of KCRW spun it on his "Best of 2003" radio program. Now, returning with "Exile In The Woods", The Cheebacabra continues on it's path of releasing quality funk fusion music accompanied by beautiful, fantastical artwork. This time around, the cover painting is by world renowned author/artist Desmond Morris ("The Naked Ape").
In addition to recording, remixing, and DJ'ing (including a recent Canadian tour as DJ/beatboxer for Tom Green), Cheeba also manages the Mackrosoft label with brother Aja West.

Press Release : Grant Phabao is the french dubmeister.
Rooted in the 70's stylings of Lee Perry, King Tubby & Herbie Hancock, his trademark dubby and spacey sound is like nothing you've ever heard in the last 10 years.
After a bunch of singles and remixes for french label Pro-Zak Trax at the end of the 90's, including the worldwide pumpin' house hit-single "Tub" in 1998, he started his own label T.I.M.E.C. (along with french hitmaker Captain Déétendu & music-webmeister Djouls), producing and releasing 3 collective and thematic albums in 2004, "Time(c) To Relax", "Electronic Bossa & Psychedelic Soul Samba" & "Noëlectro", along with his own first album, "Kulchaklash", starring Jamaican legendary Studio One DJ The Lone Ranger.
2006 saw the release of a new 12 inch single, a cover of "(A Message To Your) Rudie" starring The Lone Ranger and Carlton Livingston on vocals. An EP supported and played by ROB LUIS (Tru Thoughts), TROJAN SOUND SYSTEM (BBC/6 Mix), PAUL GAMBLIN (Black & Blue Radio Show / the Heavy Mannas), JUSTIN CRAWFORD (The Unabombers), PAUL MURPHY (Afro Art), MFSB (Indamixworldwide), HENRI KOHN (Clubstar/Soul Star Records), JON FREER (Mosoul.co.uk), FAT CITY RECORDS...
Praise started to flow from the worldwide underground, the international p2p scene and a few connoisseurs, and he soon started collaborating with artists met on the Internet, swapping remixing skills worldwide.
You'll find here Grand Central Records' Jon Kennedy skanking like a Kingstonian, Bastard Jazz's Chronic Sonata in a rootsy deep dub dress, Pro-Zak Trax's Professor Oz in High-Fidelity dub, or Seattle's funkateers The Mackrosoft in a breakbeat jazz-funk stylee.
They all got remixed by Grant Phabao and they loved it. Some of them also produced some groovy remixes in exchange, with Jon Kennedy fooling with Grant Phabao & The Lone Ranger's "Ethiopia" and Tru Thoughts/Bastard Jazz's Mawglee electrifying their "Fever" cover.
In 2005, Grant Phabao launched with former Radio Nova programmer Loik Dury and TIMEC partner Djouls the cult podcast ParisDJs.com, mastering all the mixes in his glorious and unique "supersaound". A few booties were produced for this online show, we've included a pair of them here for your distorted aural pleasure.
