Solid Steel radio show - Strictly Kev & Mafiagato

This week (18th May) Strictly continues his spring cleaning and rolls out a slower collection of tunes for bits & bobs part 2. The Emperor Machine features twice overlaid with female vocal tracks and Lost Idol, Brian Eno and Strictly's latest psych, surf, pop 60's digging discovery; The Dragons feature as we drift to an ambient ending.
Where would we be without our weekly guest, this week we welcome Mafiagato. The hardest working Ninja fan on the net turns in his first mix for Solid Steel and it's an axle grinder! (cockney rhyming for blinder don't you know). Its a tribute mix to the old nights in the Train Club based in Barcelona from 1990 to 1993 when Mafiagato and his crew used to play hardcore hip hop for the masses.

Yeah, just back from work all the morning in da calle and when i see this package in my boxmail,
I see the light in the tunnel. A brilliant DJ promo of one of the best mixes avaiable to buy soon.
The promo have a nice artwork made by Openmind aka Strictly Kev and is "Very Limited Edition" how say in one corner....... LA HOSTIA!! only 50 are made, that Ninja crew are locos!!
2x7", yes, 2 small dosis of wax, one have a two tracks from the mix and the other 7" you can use to scratch whit Serato Live, like a mad cat in da turntable. Brilliant.

Passons rapidement sur le CD mixé, petite bombe de turntablism à partir de matière provenant exclusivement du catalogue Ninja Tune. Les amateurs de scratcheries en feute-feute-feut, f-ff-ff-fresh et de n-nn-ni-ne-ni-ne-nine-ja-ninjaaaa tune se reconnaisseront. Disons juste que si le label a décidé de sortir ce mix à l'origine uniquement destiné à être diffusé sur la radio Solid Steel, c'est qu'il y a une raison. Allez, direction le iPod direct. Et jetons directement un oeil sur le DVD: BING BADADAMDEM!!! Énorme grosse tuerie!! Tout commence par un intro, "Shuriken Cut", mélangeant animation et vidéo, pour une partie de scratch d'anthologie. Le "Live at Unit, Tokyo" du 28 Janvier 2005, il faut le voir pour le croire. En plus d'être un tueur, Dj Kentaro fait le spectacle comme un Roger Rabbit hip hop nippon! Le "Loop" multi angle se regarde 5 fois de suite, de face, de la droite, de la gauche, du dessus et de loin. Et à chaque fois c'est aussi fun. Une animation vient clore le festin et on file chez les potes pour faire découvrir cette petite merveille.

"Funky Axe", sympathique downtempo funky, provient de la face B d'un 45 tours sorti en 1975, "A Big Noise From Winnetka", signé d'un obscur groupe de funk, Spaghetti Head.

Info :
Depuis le milieu des années 90, l'arrivée du sac fourre-tout "trip-hop", le succès de labels comme Talkin' Loud, Ninja Tune et Mo' Wax, on assiste à l'avènement du Dj star, Gilles Peterson en tête.
Aujourd'hui tout le monde est Dj. Earl Zinger en a même fait un single ("Attack Of The Djs", sublime) à la pochette difficilement plus explicite. On y voit le Dj obligé de défendre ses platines, en train de se défendre contre une armée de wannabe Djs, avec chacun leur disque à la main.
Pourtant seuls quelques rares acharnés de l'ultimate mix, dansant, funky et éclectique, sortent du lot. Des passionnés, fous de musique et de disques. Qui ont su fédérer un public avec quelques productions d'exceptions. Qui alimentent leurs communautés de fans de mixes avec une régularité effrenée. Ils s'appellent Aim, Edan, James Lavelle (U.N.K.L.E.), Dj Shadow, Cut Chemist, Coldcut, Dj Food, Kid Koala, Quantic, Gilles Peterson, RjD2... On en compte moins de 50 dans le monde entier!
Ils rentabilisent tous cette communauté de fans qu'ils ont rassemblé au fil des années (minimum 10 avant de commencer à réellement en récolter les fruits) à coup de merchandising, de tournées et de résidences, mais aussi pour ce qui nous concerne ici, de productions attendues comme autant de messies et de compilations, mixées ou non, constituées de track sélectionnés avec l'expérience d'un Nutella. "10 ans d'expérience feront toujours la différence".
Mr Scruff fait partie de ceux-là, et dans la tradition des mixes de la série Solid Steel de chez Ninja Tune, son "Keep It solid Steel Vol.1", matiné de reggae, hip hop, funk, jazz, abstract et soul, repousse un peu plus les frontières du mix hip hop, dans une ambiance de club haut de gamme (en groove). La technique y est irréprochable et l'artistique de haut vol. Indispensable, en attendant les prochains volumes (5 sont annoncés!) la bave aux lèvres...

This Solid Steel cd is very good with skillful mixing which kinda give it that extra than many of todays shows as they sometimes have a lack of quality during poor mix planning. Recomended, if you find it, buy it!
