January 2006 sees the release of "Sound Mirrors," a new album from Coldcut.

But first we bring you a very limited promo-only 12" of one track: "Mr Nichols"

When Jon More and Matt Black played the melancholic bones of the tune to rapper/poet/rock star/actor Saul Williams they could hardly have hoped that they could tease a better lyric from him. Unfolding over three minutes we hear the story of Mr Nichols, a salaryman left on the edge, fallen apart and utterly empty.

Coldcut have weaved a slowly building piece of music of such power that Williams can focus on simple story-telling rather than preaching from the mountain. Equally interpretable as an attack on American foreign policy as a personal psychodrama, it is the quiet intensity of the music that carries it. Subtle and moving perhaps aren't the words we most commonly associate with Coldcut, but, then again, as pioneers and innovators they have built their whole career on doing the unexpected, whether it be making hits for Lisa Stansfield or walking away from the majors to start Ninja Tune. As we hope "Mr Nichols" makes clear, the only thing you can be sure of with "Sound Mirrors" is that you, along with everyone else, will have to hear it...

On ne présente plus les Coldcut. Les retardataires peuvent toujours aller faire un tour du côté de notre dossier Ninja Tune pour en savoir plus. Depuis 20 ans il nous abreuvent de grooves de toutes sortes, du funk et du hip hop le plus classique à la musique électronique la plus expérimentale en passant par le folk psychédélique.
EN 1998 ils sortent un mix désormais mythique, "Journeys By Dj - 70 minutes Of Madness" qui les place au panthéon du cut-ut. En 2004, à l'inverse, ils sortent chez Harmless une compilation old school, non mixée, "Life:Styles", constituée de 17 raretés funk, soul, disco, electro et reggae, plutôt laiback dans l'ensemble, en forme de livre d'histoire des musiques obscures qui ont pu ou auraient dû faire gigoter les dancefloors. Une collection de classiques improbables, en somme, sélectionnés par les Coldcut. On appelle ça un "indispensable", un peu comme le Cherrystones "Hidden Charms" sorti chez 13AMP en plus black beaucoup moins pop...

Le mix culte "Journeys by Dj" , sorti à l'origine en 1995, en hommage aux pionniers du cut'n'paste, Double D & Steinski, Grandmaster Flash, William Burroughs, etc., a été réédité cette année avec comme pitch "The Best Mix of All-time", ce qui n'est pas loin d'être bien vrai, et il est encore temps de se le procurer. Histoire de comprendre un peu mieux ce que veux dire "Cut'n'Paste" ici, voici un extrait de 4 minutes de ce mix génialissime de Coldcut ("aided & abetted by PC & Strictly" dit le CD d'origine sorti chez Music Unites, sachant que Strictly Kev & PC, aujourd'hui c'est tout simplement Dj Food...), qui devrait achever de mettre l'eau à la bouche de tous les joueurs de platines déjantés...

En fait de Coldcut, c'est surtout 'Various Artists' qu'il aurait fallu agraffer à cet album de remixes de différents morceaux de "Let us play". Évidemment, vous imaginez bien l'exitation qui a gagnée mes neurones désormais bien seuls lorsque j'ai pu ouïr l'objet en question. En fait, "Atomic Moog 2000" reprend tout son sens entre les mains de Cornelius, tout comme le nouveau mix de "More beats & pieces" ici agrémenté du talent de DJ Lord Fader aux platines (un mec qui aime bien Eric B & Rakim et Public Enemy!). À noter dans la case 'j'ai de l'humour et des valeurs', l'inédit "Last night a cliche saved my life" featuring Grandmaster 'j'suis le premier rappeur' Flash et DJ Food. Donc, des grands moments à écouter presque comme un nouvel album si ce n'est qu'ici, ce sont les futurs stars de Ninja Tune qui s'éxercent à l'art de leurs maîtres. De plus, si l'informatique, la vidéo et les drogues vous interressent, un deuxième CD vous est proposé dans une version Rom... ce qui donne un CD-Rom! Fabuleux, non? Le petit hic c'est que seul les PC sont ici concernés. Honteux et dommage car Coldcut propose sur ce CD un petit logiciel de leur création ("V-Jamm") pour les vidéo-jockeys avec déjà pleins de samples d'images de leur clips et leurs versions intégrales. Un CD qui pourrait vite devenir une obsession si vous ne l'avez pas encore.
