Polar Pair, alias Malkiel Grossman et Nadav Ravid est un duo de Djs/producteurs israeliens que le boss de Tru Thoughts a rencontré quand ils l'invitèrent en Israël pour venir jouer et faire une conférence sur la tenue d'un label indépendant. Djs activistes de la bonne parole du groove, depuis plus de dix ans, parmi les premiers à introduire la house à la radio chez eux, ils sortent en 1997 un premier maxi vinyle éclectique, "Cool Panic EP", sur Vendetta Records, surfant allègrement entre intelligent electro, jungle 90's, house discoïde et beats hip hop... Ils enregistrent la même année un épique "The Brain The Funk" qui n'aurait pas dépareillé sur une des compilations "Shapes" de chez Tru Thoughts, accompagné d'une version dub évoquant les débuts de Mr Scruff sur Rob's Records. En 2001 ce track est ré-enregistré puis remixé par Two Tall Men (Oosh alias Yishay Adar des Top Hat Carriers et Yoav B qui dirige aujourd'hui le label Wabi Sabi) en une version complètement electroclash... 3 ans avant l'infâme mode qui tomba sur la tête de toute l'Europe et n'en finit toujours pas de mourir à petit feu à ce jour. Malheureusement pour des raisons de samples pas clearé ce track précurseur est absent de l'album afro-electro-house "Cresh" que Polar Pair sortent en 2002 sur le label israelien NMC.
On les retrouve chez Tru Thoughts à l'automne 2005 sur ce "Shapes Z", un EP/compilation qui regroupe quelques tracks inédits en vinyle et très demandés par toute la deejays nation. Ils y occupent toute la face A avec un premier track broken beat, "Over My Head", plutôt funky, remixé par le Mancunien Maddslinky (alias Zed Bias, Phuturistix), splendide mais toujours un peu "les producteurs s'adressent aux oreilles de producteurs" comme la grande majorité des productions broken beat. Le second track, "Out Of Sight", electro-hip hop chanté, n'a lui pas d'âge et mérite largement d'être joué sur du bon gros sound system bien bassu. Voilà pour la découverte, pas de quoi claquer un chameau non plus.
Les merveilles se trouvent à mon goût surtout en face B, avec tout d'abord l'ensoleillé et très 70's remix "samba-nova" du "Mishaps Happening" de Quantic par le norvégien Prins Thomas, grosse tuerie latino à facettes que l'on avait pu découvrir en CD sur la compilation "Shapes Red". LE track indispensable de cet EP pour tous les Djs qui aiment la musicalité dans leur groove. Vient ensuite un remix inédit du "Bungee Jump Againt Racism" de Nirobi & Barakas (alias Rob Luis & Bonobo), signé par le jeune et très talentueux Diesler, dont il faut absolument dégoter son album latin/jazz/afrocuban/post-breakbeat "Diggin It Somethin Rotten" si ce n'est déjà fait. Diesler vient ajouter une bonne couche de cuivres et un feeling afrobeat qui en font une véritable bombe à dancefloors et on comprend aisément la necessité pour Tru Thoughts de la sortir sur une galette noire! Pour clore cet EP, le "Walking Through Tomorrow" du Quantic Soul Orchestra remixé par TM Juke fait lui aussi sa première apparition en vinyle (on le trouvait sur la compilation "Shapes Yellow" en CD), et consacre définitivement le Juke en roi de la soul à l'anglaise, suite à son superbe travail de production sur le nouvel album d'Alice Russell, "My Favorite Letters", tout aussi indispensable que le Diesler pré-cité...

Que vous aimiez Amon Tobin, Kid Koala ou les deux, vous aimerez ce track qui représente l'idéal d'une collaboration entre deux artistes, quand leurs talents respectifs arrivent à fusionner à ce point. Entre l'ambience cinématique et joyeusement déprimée de sieur Amon et le sample d'espèce de guimbarde déglinguée avec lequel Kid Koala vient gentiment nous tirer la larme, les contraires s'attirent et on pense visiter une petite maison des horreurs dans un vieux cirque rustique et rouillé. Une fois la visite terminée... forcément on y retourne.

Il n'y a que Ninja Tune pour arriver à se renouveler dans le downtempo breakbeat jazz à chaque fois. De Irresistible Force à Dj Food, nombreux sont les merveilleux albums grosso-modo "à cette sauce" que l’on peut resservir sans hésitation encore aujourd'hui avec délectation (je repense aussi aux 9 Lazy 9 par exemple).
Bonobo est de cette catégorie: classieux, au-dessus de la mélée (et pourtant ça s'agite, du Big Chill au Buddha Bar), intemporel. Et déjà deux albums et autant de classiques au compteur. On ne saura trop remercier Ninja Tune de nous laisser le découvrir en entier (en streaming) pour achever de nous convaincre.
Pour les fanas du téléchargement est disponible "Pick up", extrait du nouvel album "Dial 'M' for Monkey", aux envolées de flûtes enchanteurs et aux jazz breaks des plus funky, mais après celui-ci vous irez forcément jeter une oreille sur tout l'album...
