Coming in 2007 on Tru Thoughts Recordings... Alice in Jamaica !!
Tru Thoughts loved Djouls' Tru-Thoughts Obsession fanblog, they even used to say it was "better than the official site". Thankfully, the Tru-Thoughts website (tru-thoughts.co.uk) has been re-designed and is now quite the best I must admit. Hopefully, I've now started to integrate in this site (tru-thoughts.net) more content, announcing shows in Paris in collaboration with Paris DJs and 3eme Voie, adding new artists and labels in the scene musical universe as Brighton's finest...
The connection goes now even deeper now... Last year while legendary Studio One deejay The Lone Ranger (rangerstyle.com) was at TIMEC's studios in Paris, I had him listen to many new releases, I order to produce some cool bootlegs together. The Jamaican rub-a-dub master agreed immediatly to the idea, saying "we've been doing bootlegs in Jamaica for 30 years!"... The artist that knocked his ears was Alice Russell, of course: he loved "Humankind" and wanted to play around with this track.
French reggae dubmeister Grant Phabao (grantphabao.com) took the acapella from the 12 inch, built a new riddim just for it, while The Lone Ranger checked the lyrics in order to write a few new verses that wouldbe replying to Alice's ones. A few days later, the night before going back to Jamaica was the one, and Phabao and Ranger recorded their "Tuff n'Uff Skank" remix of Alice Russell's "Humankind"...
Rob Luis (A&R for Tru Thoughts) and TM Juke (producer of the original version of the track) loved it right away and soon started asking to release it themselves.... We were thrilled by the idea and started thinking of an "Alice In Jamaica" concept of bringing more Alice Russell songs into pure roots reggae territories.
Grant Phabao picked into my Tru Thoughts vinyls and found out more Alice Russell acapellas were available. Bim bam! Digitalized into WAV files, riddim-ized into skanking beats and one drop grooves, 3 more remixes happened quite fast.... The Tru Thoughts crew loved those too and I'm now please to announce they've scheduled an autumn release of those 4 Grant Phabao reggae remixes on a "Shapes EP" 12 inch and on a "Shapes compilation" CD! A L'Aroye & Ky 'Storm' latin boogaloo version is also part of this hot hot tropical vibe record.

In those hard times when government individuals thrive more and more on the poor, it's really nice to meet educated and involved artists. The Procussions are that kind of people, nice, intelligent and with something to say, without ever losing their natural cool. This is rare enough to be pointed out...
Their latest album, "5 Sparrows For 3 Cents", was released earlier this year in the US but only in november 2006 in Europe. It's top-of-the-notch L.A. hip hop, funky, old school, with plenty of sunshine, so we thought at Paris DJs headquarters that it could be a good idea to try and do a collaboration with them, that could also help promote their french tour.
The band got into the idea right away and soon -thanks to the Internet- the french dubmeister Grant Phabao, who recently reworked some George Clinton, Ty or Alice Russell tracks, received some vocal parts to play with...
A few days later a new reggae instrumental was born, wonderfully gracing The Procussions' track with skanking riffs, heavy bass, clavinets chops, echo, reverb and lots of percussion - Phabao style.

This track is not for music categories, but for recipe books : take elements from a US West coast jazz/funk lounge number [For example, "The Immortality Project" by Seattle's funkateers The Mackrosoft]. Select the 70's groovy melody of the Fender Rhodes and wah-wah guitar, of course. Cherish the sax licks from multiple-man Skerik. Don't forget the organ stylings from former Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark. Then get the whole thing drenched into deep dub territory by expert in sound manipulation Grant Phabao. Don't get lost into deep Studio One or Rhythm & Sound dub but instead keep a nice electro jazz funky vibe flowing. You can now call it a "remix"... and start spreading the news!

"Oh Shit! Bastard Jazz keeps filling the void with this mind melting seven inch from Canadians Chronic Sonata. Everyday is everything I wanted it to be and more. If you love dub, buy this record. If you love downtempo, buy this record. If you love Brooklyn, buy this record! This track is bass heavy and sparse in all the right places, with the most tasteful placement of vocal snippets since Osbourne Ruddock was runnin tings. The haters will hate me for saying that, but how can I not be enthusiastic when Bastard Jazz keeps raising their own bar and pushing the surrounding music scene to bring something better for the open-minded dancefloors/living rooms. Never content to rest on the laurels of one solid side, they enlist Frenchman Grant Phabao for the always on point Bastard Jazz remix. More than overhauling the original, I imagine Grant simply introduced Chronic Sonata to Mad Professor in a sauna at a Swiss resort. They then described what they were feeling about the current state of the world and Phabao laid it down on a fat piece of tape. Just to put it over the top, check out the label design and see how things should be done. I like it. BJ, put ya lighters up!"
