Carlton Livingston is one of the great, sort of lost singers of the early eighties dancehall scene. He's just released a new album, Bridge of Life and it's a killer. Under the production of Grant Phabao, Carlton's smooth style and voice made this album full of both dancehall mashers and lovers tunes. The sound is a cross between Groundation and more traditional 70's reggae from the island. Here's a selection of some of his earlier hits mixed with a few tracks from this new album.

Info :
Latin music as seen through the eyes of Paris DJs Grant Phabao & Djouls sounds like nonconformist crate-digging mixed with deep funkiness, with a solid layer of good nonsense beneath them. The plats they're serving here assemble Peruvian or Brazilian soul, American funk, European salsa, remixed Columbian grooves and Miami latin hip hop. All dressed in their shining afro-latin stylings. The dishes are no less delectable and the cooking no less accomplished on the second part of the menu... Having lit their fires and greased their skillets, the chefs proceed to satisfy the demands of gourmets and gourmands alike, with Ethiopian ethno-jazz, Brighton's finest latinized electronics, Venezuelan disco, UK Boogaloo and American latin-rock, all served with more than a soupçon of hot sauce.

Info :
Our second volume of afro grooves from around the world gathers some rare Nigerian funk from the Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa, The Funkees, One World and Ofege. You can now go hunting for the LPs on Ebay... We've also stumbled upon an incredible UK pressing of an LP called "The Body Music" from a band called Afro Funk which we think is from Ghana. If you have more info on this please share it with us cos' those african beats & soul have been playing repeatedly on our stereo for days now! Oddities come from Karl Denson, former sax player from late 90's US retro-funk band The Greyboy Allstars, the closing track from his fire-smoking funk album "The Bridge" from 2004 is an afrobeat monster we couldn't not play. For vinyl addicts, the track is available on a glorious 12 inch thanks to Adrian Gibson's Freestyle Records little label (UK). You will also hear that we've been diggin deep in our own crates, with "Wilderness", a track from Manu Dibango issued on a rare 1972 library album... and then reissued by our friend Manu Boubli on the mighty "Racubah" compilation. The mix closes with a sunny piece of African pop from Ghanean Kelenkye Band that should leave you eargerly waiting for a third volume of "African Mashed Potato Popcorn"... coming soon on your favorite Podcast!

The Lone Ranger - Dub Salvador - A Grant Phabao Mix

Lone Ranger Dub Salvador
The Lone Ranger - Dub Salvador - A Grant Phabao Mix
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC078, 2006-04-07

Info :
The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted N°1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. Without Lone Ranger, no Yellowman, no Shabba Ranks, no Sean Paul...
Thanks to the incredible production skills of French dubmeister Grant Phabao, who crafted for him a splendid album last year ("Kulchaklash" / to be pronounced "Culture Clash"), The Lone Ranger is now back on the charts, with rub-a-dub partner Carlton Livingston and their cover of Dandy Livingston's hit "(A Message To You) Rudie". This new single is making waves all over the irie globe on a strictly limited edition 12 inch (500 copies only!), issued on T.I.M.E.C./The Pusher in Europe (with both extended and dub remixes), and on an already out-of-print 7 inch, issued on Silver Bullet in Jamaica. This marvelous slice of pure jamaican spice is a winning crowd-pleaser sure to hit the spot every time, we couldn't let it out of this exclusive mix of oldies, rarities & classics, so... enjoy!

Don't be misled by the calm and tripping opening Kenyan track from Mombasa, which is just an introduction to the afro grooves that are offered afterwards. After this, you may then embark on a tribalistic trip to Nigeria, with afrofunk marvels from the Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa (find the album!), Nkengas, and The Apostles. Your voyage will also visit South Africa, with 70's afropop oddities by and Assagai, and Cameroon, with the afro space jazz of Franck Biyong and Massak. In order to be accurate in this mashed mix of various afro meals, we also couldn't leave you without another slice of Antibalas magic, who are, along with frenchman Doctor L, leading the now worldwide afrobeat scene into the 21st century with an undeniable, exceptional, revolutionnary and graceful talent for going forward. And big thanks to Mackdaddy who gave me access to his vast collection of African Music for this selection of Afro Funk & Soul 1971-2004.

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.4

grant phabao and djouls are molesting laura vol 4
Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.4
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC093, 2006-01-18

Info :

"Are Molesting Laura Vol.4", yes, it's already the fourth volume of the adventures of Grant Phabao & Djouls in the regions of the strange music, unreal covers, bastard pop and new remixes! After a first one available only on the p2p, with a surprising bootleg of Roots Manuva and Serge Gainsbourg, a second volume diffused on Radio Latina in the form of a latin-delirious selection of tracks, a third volume to download in here with its unmissable bootleg of Grand Master Flash vs Mel Brooks (with bits of Beastie boys in it), here's a number four that'll rank among the crustiest, with three bootlegs chosen with intensive care out of an explosive outburst of creative production that comes from all over the world (for the DJs greatest pleasure).
The entry is signed by a Parisian who goes by the Dopplebanger guise, it's an extremely well crafted immediate bootleg of the just out "Can I Have It Like That" from Pharrell (N.E.R.D./Neptunes) with the "Can I Kick It?" from A Tribe Called Quest (1994). A future classic, followed by a series of covers and remixes rather crazy, sometimes mad and often funky as hell, to finally end up with two tasty bootlegs, a "classico" to begin with, opposing Primal Scream's crossover hit "Loaded" with Rae & Christian featuring The Jungle Brothers's "Play One", extracted from their first album; and for dessert a whole new bootleg, very exclusive, only for you, can you imagine how nice we are, clashing without an ounce of shame Kinny & Horne's "Why Me" with Max Romeo's "Chase The Devil". For the historians the Horne in Kinny & Horne is Espen Horne which could be found in the "Are Molesting Laura Vol.3" mix available recently on ParisDJs, he was before called himself Bobby Hugues Combination (for Stereo Deluxe records) or Bobby Hugues Experience (afor Ultimate Dillema)... (for those interested check his complete discography).

What good roots music is happening in this new millenium, rotted by the return to the 80s sounds? In Paris, the Indian summer isn't ending and we don't complain. That's why, to conclude in style this lovely month of October, we decided to offer here a special "reggae, hip hop & dub", in the form of a palace of discoveries and remixes. Including some burning Parisian productions, unheard yet on the radio, signed by Grant Phabao, Seven Dub, the Mighty Blunts or Professor Oz. They are accompanied by some recent "instant classics", for a world tour of the roots vibration, with albino Afro-American rapper Brother Ali, San Francisco reggae masters Groundation, Russian Dj Vadim and his new hip hop project One Self (with Blu Rum 13 and Yarah Bravo), Californian Matt Haines (alias The Rip Off Artist), Germaneers Boozoo Bajou or Burnt Friedman with the Nu-Dub Players, Englishman Biggabush (alias Lightning Head, half of Rockers Hi-Fi), or New-Yorkers Chronic Sonata, remixed by Grant Phabao following a connection on the Web between the TIMEC label in Paris and Bastard Jazz in Brooklyn...

A "covers & bootlegs" special, mashed-up by the famous insane lazy ones of the Telegraphe station (Paris 20th), in the shape of a rarities and improbable covers jam. Includes a bootie made especially for the occasion by the mild lunatics duet, with a Mel Brooks pie dough (“It' S Good To Be The King”), apples slices imported from Grandmaster Flash's ("The Message"), and some Beastie Boys caramel wrappings. The Quantic Soul Orchestra is also characterized by its surrealist covers: a take on the Red Astaire bootleg which had mixed an acapella of D'Angelo with an instrumental from Cal Tjader ("Follow Me"), and a raw replay of Mr Scruff who had completely pumped Moondog without crediting him ("Get A Move On", actually "Bird's Lament").
